FastWill — Online Estate Planning Platform

The challenge

Estate planning documents depend on a large number of personal details, relationships, assets and state-specific legal requirements.

The platform needed to turn that complexity into a process that customers could complete without being overwhelmed. Behind the user-facing experience, their answers had to be transformed into the correct document structure, content and repeated sections.

At the same time, FastWill needed all the systems required for a commercial SaaS product: payments, subscriptions, packages, discount codes, user roles, partner access and educational content supporting customers throughout the process.

From concept to working product

FastWill was built from scratch by a two-developer team.

Zach, the founder and CEO, provided the product vision, detailed functional diagrams, Figma designs and legal document templates. Michał combined development with elements of project coordination and took primary responsibility for the customer data collection flow.

We made the wider technical and database decisions together. I was responsible for most of the remaining platform, working across both backend and frontend to turn the supplied product requirements and designs into a functioning commercial application.

My role

My work covered the majority of the original platform, including its main commercial and document-generation systems.

I developed complete features across Laravel, Livewire, JavaScript and Tailwind CSS, connecting the user interface with business logic, payments, permissions and generated documents.

My main areas of responsibility included:

• Stripe payments and subscriptions
• Product packages, purchasing and discount codes
• Automated generation of personalised legal documents
• The Advisor partner portal and its separate payment flows
• Role-based access for customers, Advisors and administrators
• The blog and Learn Center
• A large part of the application’s frontend and backend
• Ongoing UX improvements and development after the initial launch

Dynamic legal document generation

I built the system responsible for generating personalised legal documents from templates supplied for individual document types and, in many cases, individual US states.

Generating a document involved considerably more than inserting customer details into fixed placeholders. Different sections could be included or omitted depending on the customer’s answers, while others needed to be repeated dynamically for multiple beneficiaries, children, assets or other people and items.

The system translated structured customer data into complete documents matching the appropriate template and individual circumstances.

Payments and commercial model

I implemented the platform’s Stripe integration, including one-time payments and subscriptions.

I also developed the supporting commercial functionality: product packages, discount codes and purchase flows. These systems connected the selected estate planning service with payment processing and access to the appropriate parts of the platform.

Advisor partner portal

After the initial customer platform had launched, we expanded FastWill with a dedicated Advisor offering.

The Advisor portal allowed partners to provide FastWill services to their own clients through a white-label model. It introduced separate roles, permissions and payment flows designed specifically for the partner side of the business.

I was responsible for building this area of the platform, including its backend logic, frontend and Stripe-based payments.
